5th Grade Supplies
We are delighted to be your student’s teachers for a fantastic fifth grade experience. Fifth grade is what you might consider a “training wheel year” for Middle School. As a result, we will be looking to our students to become more self-reliant and responsible for their learning. By the end of the year, we expect them to be ready to take on the added responsibilities of Middle School and beyond. This letter will communicate important information you will need to know for the upcoming school year.
Schedule: Fifth grade follows a similar model to what they did in fourth grade. Students will have Reading and Math with their homeroom teacher, and switch classes for Science, Social Studies, and Writing. Schedules will be handed out the first days of school. Grades: Students and parents are expected to keep track of grades through parent portal (ASPEN), as your student will see three teachers daily. Parent portal is the main form of communicating grades with families and we will not be initiating emails about grades. If you do not have a PIN, it is available in the main office. In addition to progress reports and report cards, parent portal is the best method to track your child’s progress throughout the school year. Grades are updated weekly in ASPEN. Communication: Email is checked daily by classroom teachers. Please allow 1-3 days to return requests via email. ClassDojo is the preferred method of communication, and is used throughout the school day to monitor student progress, attendance, and homework. If you are new to Dojo, it is app you can access on your computer or your phone that shows your child’s progress throughout the school day. In addition, you can message teachers with any questions or concerns you have. Please sign up for ClassDojo to stay connected to your child’s progress. A letter with instructions will go home the first days of school. Homework Policy: Students will have nightly homework in reading and math. Please check class blogs for up-to-date homework assignments. Late homework will be accepted up to three days after its due date. If an assignment is late, a deduction will be taken from the assignment. Per the student handbook, if your child is absent from school, they can have the equivalent number of days they were absent to complete any missed assignments. Assignments handed in past the late grace period can earn ½ credit only. Attendance: Tardies, absences, and early dismissals have a negative impact on student success. Core instruction starts immediately after arrival and continues until students are dismissed at 3:45. Iit is important that students arrive on time and are present throughout the day. Please attempt to make appointments outside of school day hours, when possible. We appreciate your support. Volunteering: Please register as a parent volunteer. Volunteers must be registered through the office in order to attend a field trip or to volunteer in the school.
